A lot of things happened in the Big Ten this year, and with all that movement a lot of teams benefited. The Northwestern Wildcats were one of those teams as with Michigan getting into the Outback Bowl, Northwestern gets a trip to the Gator Bowl to play the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Northwestern didn’t put together that memorable of a season but thanks to the sanctions imposed against the Ohio State Buckeyes, Northwestern lucked their way into a more important game than they may have otherwise found themselves in.
In terms of excitement level for this game, it does have the makings to be one of those surprise entertaining games that everyone can flip on and throughly have fun with. This is Mississippi State’s second Gator Bowl appearance in three years as they battled the Michigan Wolverines in 2011 in a game that actually saw them blow out their Big Ten opponent.
Northwestern isn’t a stiff opponent, but looking at the season both these teams had, we shouldn’t expect the 52-14 thrashing we saw back in 2011 when the Bulldogs last made the trip the Gator Bowl.
The trip marks the first time in the history of Northwestern that they’ve been invited to the Gator Bowl.
