After much speculation as to who Arkansas would name as their head coach, a surprising name has surfaced. Now former Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema is expected to sign a contract that will make him the new head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, according to Pat Forde at Yahoo! Sports.
The official announcement is expected sometime today, but the Razorbacks will wait until tomorrow to officially introduce Bielema as their new head coach. The move comes as a complete shock, as Arkansas was not even mentioned anywhere close to Wisconsin or Bielema in the recent weeks as their search for a head coach intensified.
However, the surprise factor will wear off in time, as the Bielema hire is a brilliant one for the university.
In this time with the Badgers, Bielema lead the school to three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances, the third of which is upcoming this January against Stanford.
The Razorbacks are looking to move away from the embarrassing end to the Bobby Petrino era that saw the school become the subject of scandalous tabloid headlines after the coach crashed his bike with his mistress — a woman who was not only an employee of the university but much younger than the senior coach.
Hiring Bielema starts to process of moving Arkansas away from that, and hopefully towards winning ways once again. The road isn’t easy, but Arkansas already surprised everyone by stealing a really good coach away from a University he was seemingly happy at so the next order of business is to do something with it.
