Dallas Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo said that DeMarcus Cousins has mental issues after he was caught on broadcasts giving Mayo the old crotch shot in Monday’s game between the Mav’s and Kings. The NBA hasn’t fully backed Mayo on his phycological evaluation of Cousins but they are agreeing that the shot to the family jewels was uncalled for and the league has suspended Cousins for one game.
This isn’t Cousin’s first suspension of the season either, as he’s already served a two game sentence for an altercation with San Antonio Spurs broadcaster Sean Elliot earlier this season.
So while Mayo’s assessment of Cousin’s mental state may not be supported league-wide, the Kings forward isn’t doing himself any favors when it comes to making it look like he’s not a nutcase.
But what’s more is that we could be facing a more severe and tragic long term struggle with Cousins. He’s a kid that possess so much raw and pure talent that he could be considered among the league’s best centers if he would just calm down for five minutes and not be so emotional every single day of his career.
Instead of using his skills to be one of the league’s best, Cousins has a track history of getting into people’s faces. He was kicked off the Team USA Select team, everyone in the NBA thinks he’s a dirty player and he’s gotten a reputation for — well being crazy. And then there’s his two incidents this season which prove that even if you’re not a player and are a broadcaster, you’re not safe.
It’s a shame to see talent wasted, but Cousins wouldn’t be the first and won’t be the last player to ruin his potential by being, for lack of a better term, a douchebag.
