By Josh Hill -
Of all the guys that could be fired, Jason Garrett has the worst of luck. After a slow start to the season, the Cowboys are rebounding fast and hard, pushing towards a playoff berth. But even if the Cowboys make the playoffs and even if Garrett leads them to the NFC Championship game (*pause for laughter*), he might still get the axe.
The biggest x-factor in Garrett’s fate is Sean Payton. If Payton and the Saints can’t hash out a deal before Payton hits the open market, Garrett’s “window” will likely be closed. Jerry Jones said that Garrett’s window was closing before the season even started and well before the prospect of grabbing Sean Payton as his successor arose.
If Payton returns to the Saints, or heads somewhere else, Garrett will most likely stay if the Cowboys make the playoffs. If Jones feels pressure though, we might see a premature promotion of Rob Ryan to head coach. Either way you look at it, Jason Garrett could likely be one of two coaches with a winning record fired after this season.
