Cain Velasquez has finally completed his climb back to the top of the UFC heavyweight division.
After losing the title to Junior dos Santos during the organizations debut on network television, Velasquez had his highly anticipated rematch with Dos Santos on Saturday night. Velasquez entered the octagon determined to once again have the heavyweight strap around his waist and he made a big statement with his performance.
The judges scored the bout 50-45, 50-43 and 50-44 for Velasquez, who is once again the undisputed champion.
It was the most impressive fight of Velasquez’s career since winning the title from Brock Lesnar.
“It was the hardest fight I’ve ever been through,” Velasquez said following the bout. “I was so tired, but I kept thinking, ‘Do it, do it, do it. This is my wife’s Christmas present. Baby, I got your Christmas present right here.”
Velasquez bruised and battered Dos Santos from the opening frame and showcased his incredible cardio as he carried a relentless pace from start to finish.
While Velasquez was dominate in capturing the title, enough cannot be said about Dos Santos.
There are reports that Dos Santos suffered a broken jaw in the second-round, but he showed the heart of a champion and continued to fight on bringing everything he had left in the tank. It wasn’t enough to stop Velasquez from running away with the title, but it was enough to go the distance and put on an inspiring showing.
A third fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos will happen down the line and the hype will be through the roof.
