UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be defending his title against Chael Sonnen following a coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter, but the next title shot could be going to a Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier.
The undefeated Cormier currently fights at heavyweight, but his teammate at AKA, Cain Velasquez, just won the UFC heavyweight title agains Junior Dos Santos this past weekend. Velasquez immediately said after the fight that he would not fight Cormier in the octagon.
“I wouldn’t [fight Cormier]. This is my friend, my teammate and my coach,” Velasquez told Fox Sports while sitting next to his AKA stablemate during a post-fight interview. “If you want to see us fight, go to AKA three days a week.”
Cormier has one final fight in Strikeforce against Dion Staring before he will make the jump to the UFC.
At 5-foot-11, Cormier’s frame could handle a drop to 205-pounds in order to avoid a potential match up with Velasquez and it appears the diet change will be next for Cormier.
So who will Cormier fight in his UFC debut? Dana White believes Cormier could be next in line for Jon Jones.
“[Daniel Cormier] is going to bring a lot of excitement to the heavyweight or light heavyweight division,” White said. “And he could be next in line to fight Jones.”
MMA fans should be ecstatic about a possible Jones – Cormier match up. Cormier possesses the strong wrestling that could present a challenge for Jones.
