The USA women’s soccer team put together a phenomenal year on the pitch in 2012 and they are seeing the recognition pour in. Today at the Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich, USA striker Abby Wambach was named the FIFA Player of the Year.
Wambach became the first American woman to win the award since Mia Hamm won in 2002.
The 32-year-old edged out teammate Alex Morgan for the award and former five-time winner Marta of Brazil. Wambach was presented the award by USA goalkeeper Hope Solo.
Former USA women’s soccer head coach Pia Sundhage took home Coach of the Year honors.
It is a great way for the team to cap off a year that included their third-straight gold in the Olympics.
