As we begin to learn details of the shortened NHL season and looming schedule, many are wondering when the Los Angeles Kings will begin their defense of the Stanley Cup.

Per initial reports, the Kings will host the Chicago Blackhawks in the season opener on January 19th.

Before the game, the Kings will hold their ring ceremony and raise the Stanley Cup championship banner. News of the match up came from Sportsnet’s John Shannon. The game matches up two of the past three Stanley Cup champions.

Last season, the Kings and Blackhawks played each other four times with Los Angeles earning the edge in the head-to-head series, 2-1-1.

The Kings-Blackhawks match up joins three other rumored games on opening night — Minnesota vs. Colorado,  Montreal hosting Toronto and Ottawa staying in Canada but making the trip to Winnipeg.

Stay tuned to for the latest NHL schedule rumors and news.
