Mixed martial arts fans have been hoping to see a matchup in the octagon between UFC lightweight champion and the Strikeforce title holder Gilbert Melendez and they may be getting their wish. Reports indicate that UFC officials are targeting the UFC on FOX 7 event in San Jose, California at the HP Pavilion for the potential matchup.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the UFC has its sights set on April 20’s UFC on FOX 7 event to pair UFC lightweight titleholder Henderson against Strikeforce’s last reigning divisional champion, Gilbert Melendez.
The event is likely to take place in Melendez’s backyard, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, where he competed eight times while on the Strikeforce roster. That promotion went out of business after last Saturday night’s event.
MMA Fighting goes on to say there are potential roadblocks that stand in the way of a Henderson vs. Melendez title match, but they fail to expand on what those roadblocks could be.
It could be a matter of money or ironing out the final details in Melendez’s UFC contract, but if the organization truly wants to put on this fight for the fans they will find a way to get it done.
As an avid mixed martial arts fan myself, I am hoping that the two sides can get an agreement done.
