If you’re just waking up or getting off work, Deadspin sent a sonic shockwave through the sports community about an hour ago when they reported that Manti Te’o’s deceased girlfriend never actually existed and that we had all been duped into believing a hoax. While Deadspin remains that only outlet reporting the news, it has nevertheless taken off and hit the stratosphere and Notre Dame has released a statement via their Facebook page saying that Te’o is as much a victim in this as everyone else.

From Notre Dame’s Facebook page:

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

Details surrounding the story are still coming in, and Te’o hasn’t confirmed or denied any of the accusations made in Deadspin’s report. At the moment all we have is Deadspin’s report, the evidence within that report and Notre Dame’s statement on the situation.
