The 49ers didn’t score until midway through the second quarter but when they did it lit a fire under them. After LaMichael James scored the first Niners touchdown of the game, the defense went out and absolutely stifled the Falcons offense. Upon getting the ball back, Colin Kaepernick ran the ball for the first time, the Niners used a huge penalty against the Falcons and Vernon Davis’ massive figure to pull within three of Atlanta.
Prior to James’ run, the score was 17-0 in favor of the Falcons. All hope seemed to be lost but after having a fire lit under them, the Niners have powered back. Davis has had an interesting relationship with Colin Kaepernick, as when the young man started his first game, Davis had nothing but praise for him. But as it became clear that Davis wasn’t Kapernick’s favorite target, he said the chemistry needed work, but he still stood behind his quarterback.
Whatever questionable chemistry existed before, seemed to have been fixed for two perfect plays on the Niners second scoring drive of the game. Kaepernick hooked up with Davis to get San Francisco down to the Falcons 4-yard line and then threw it back to Davis on the very next play for the touchdown.
And as far as Davis not being a favorite target of Kaepernick’s, so far in the NFC Championship game it’s been Davis who’s had his number dialed up the most out of all the Niners receivers at the half.
