This morning, we got confirmation that this whole Manti Te’o hoax is way more creepy and awkward than we initially thought. The lawyer for Ronaiah Tuisosopo said confirmed this morning that his client not only pretended to be Lennay Kekua, but he left voicemails on Te’o’s phone pretending to be Lennay Kekua.
My intial reaction to this news was to instantly come up with some bogus voicemails, ala SNL or Howard Stern. But for now, let’s leave that to the professionals.
The audio compiled below (which was first posted by Deadspin) are actual voicemails left by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, in character as Lennay Kekua:
In this first voicemail, Lennay calls Manti before her first chemotherapy treatment.
Here, Lennay calls Manti in tears, basically scolding him for having another girl in his room with him:
This voicemail was left on September 11th, supposedly the day Lennay was released from the hospital and the day before she died.
We heard this morning that Tuiasosopo was the one behind the voice, but we hadn’t actually heard the voice until now. While the “techy” ear can hear some heavy audio editing, but regardless, that sounds like a girl. So while it’s still possible that Te’o was involved in this, it’s becoming easier and easier to see how he was fooled.
It’s still insanely naive of him to have fallen for this, but it’s not like Tuiasosopo wasn’t convincing in selling the hoax to Te’o.
