Ashley Wagner Wins Second Straight U.S. Figure Skating National Title

American figure skater Ashley Wagner overcame some obstables to capture gold in the U.S. Figure Skating Nationals at the CenturyLunk Center in Omaha. Wagner became the first woman to win back-to-back U.S. Figure Skating Championships since Michelle Kwan in 2005.

“It’s definitely not the type of win, not the performance I had imagined myself having,” Wagner said. “But the fact I was able to repeat as champion with those two performances, that’s something to be proud of. I don’t think anyone could have prepared me for how difficult this national championship was going to be. All things considered, I’m very proud of what I achieved.

“I definitely lucked out at this competition. I think my past performance helped me at this competition. It only pushes me more to make sure I have the rest of the season be nice and solid.

Wagner held off Gracie Gold in a highly contested competition.

“I stopped focusing on what was around me, the crowd, the screaming, the other skaters, the pressure, the expectations – I let it all go,” Gold said.” I just pictured myself at my rink in Chicago and even the practices here… I just went out there and skated like I know how to skate.”

Wagner provides the United States with a great hope for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
