The Texas Tech Red Raiders nabbed a commitment on National Signing Day from three-star defensive tackle Poet Thomas, who will also sign with Texas Tech and new head coach Kliff Kingsbury. One of the top 30 rated recruits in the state of Michigan in the 2013 class, Thomas chose Texas Tech over offers from Kansas, Colorado, Old Dominion, SMU, Florida, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, and Akron.

Thomas took two official visits during his recruitment, but neither of them were to Texas Tech.

The Detroit Day County School standout took his official trips to Old Dominion and KU last month, with the visit to the Jayhawks coming just two weeks ago.

Thomas gives Texas Tech one of the top 75 ranked defensive tackle prospects in the country and a guy who does an excellent job of shedding blocks.

I like the upside that Thomas possesses, because he has a great mix of size and athleticism at 6’6″, 280 pounds.

There is a reason why a large school like UF offered the three-star prospect, and that’s because the DT has plenty of talent. Thomas also received interest from Michigan State, and he actually took a pair of unofficial visits to the school this year.

Thomas gives the Red Raiders 22 signees in the class.
