It would be his junior season, if he red shirted he would still technically be part of the team (there is no real reason to kick him off anyway), and he already has 2 years but he needs 3. He is forgetting what every professional athlete knows: taking a year away from their sport (and not just the physical exertion, but the competition they get to experience at the highest levels) is incredibly detrimental to their game. Players have said that the toughest thing about coming back from year+ long injuries is readjusting to the speed and flow of the game. They just lose something by sitting out for that long. He'd be crazy not to play. Especially since he's still getting better, his game is developing. This is a crucial time in his development as a player.
