The Utah Utes have hired former college and NFL head coach Dennis Erickson as co-offensive coordinator. Erickson will bring his nearly 30 years of head coaching experience and two national titles to the Utes to share the title with 26-year-old Brian Johnson. Erickson will begin his duties on February 19.
Utah officially announced the move on Monday morning.
“Dennis Erickson brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to our program,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a release. “He has been labeled as one of the original architects of the spread and we are looking forward to the impact he will have on our offense. Coach Erickson also has recruiting connections across the country which should benefit us on that front as well.”
Erickson released a statement of his own to express his thanks for the latest opportunity.
“I want to thank Kyle Whittingham and the University of Utah for the opportunity to get back into college football,” said Erickson. “Being around football players and coaches has been my life and that’s why I’m coming out of retirement. I will do whatever I can to help the players and coaches at Utah be successful and I am excited to get back out on the football field.”
Erickson’s impact is felt around football in a big way. He is a main influence for many of the sports offensive innovators and he will serve the Utes and Johnson well.
