With the NBA trade deadline approaching, two players who have often been discussed in trade talks are Orlando Magic guard J.J. Redick and New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert. Now, the two are connected in trade rumors that would involve swapping the two players.
The offense is fine, and on many nights terrific. But what the Knicks essentially need are more Shumperts, or at least more players who can move their feet to keep up with perimeter threats without serving as an offensive liability, a la Ronnie Brewer. Acquiring Magic guard J.J. Redick (as has been rumored) would be nice, but if the cost is the team’s one reliable perimeter defender (Shumpert), the impact of the acquisition will be greatly mitigated.
It is hard to imagine the Knicks giving up on Shumpert in order to acquire Redick, but you never know what exactly NBA teams have up their sleeves.
The team has publicly stated their support and desire to keep Shumpert on the roster, however, we can’t be too sure that Shumpert will remain a Knick until the trade deadline has passed.
