It was expected that the Atlanta Hawks would move star forward Josh Smith at the NBA trade deadline, but 3:00 p.m. has passed and Smith is still a member of the Hawks roster.
There were a number of trade rumors involving Smith in the closing ours of the trade window, with the most likely destination for the Hawks star being the Milwaukee Bucks.
But just how close was Smith to finding a new home?
Rumors are swirling that the Hawks were engaged in talks for a three-way deal with the Bucks and Orlando Magic that would have sent Smith to Milwaukee, where he has said he would be open to re-signing a long-term contract. Unfortunately, the Hawks dropped out of the discussions and left NBA fans starving for a big trade.
According to ESPN NBA Insider Chad Ford, the three teams were heavy in discussions and the Hawks dropped out literally at the last minute — at 2:59 p.m.
We were very close to having a major deal at the deadline, but it just didn’t work out.
While Atlanta dropped out of the talks with Orlando and Milwaukee, the Magic and Bucks were able to complete a deal of their own that send shooting guard J.J. Redick to Milwaukee.
