The New York Giants did not want to risk losing starting left tackle Will Beatty before the start of free agency, so the team has locked him up to a five-year deal that will keep him off of the open market.
According to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger, Beatty’s new deal is worth up to $38.5 million, with $12.5 million signing bonus and $19 million guaranteed.
It was a smart move by the Giants to lock up the former second-round pick before the start of free agency. This year, a number of top notch offensive tackles will be on the open market which could result in a bidding war that could drive up the asking price for a player like Beatty.
By signing him now, they ensure he will not leave the team and they get him at a fair and reasonable price.
