Golf: Stacy Lewis Gets LPGA Win In Singapore

Number four ranked Stacy Lewis was struggling down the stretch at The HSBC Women’s Championship in Singapore, and with a change in strategy at the 18th hole, got her first win in the 2013 season. Lewis has played well all year, but was able to close the deal on this Sunday. The 2012 Rolex Player of the Year had been laying up all week on the par five 18th hole, but teed off knowing she needed birdie to win. She hit a hybrid to the back of the green, and two putted for the birdie.

Lewis celebrated a one shot victory over Na Yeon Choi, and two shots over Paula Creamer who finished at -15 under par. Creamer put the pressure on early with birdies at three and four, but Lewis counter-punched with a tap in eagle at seven to pull away by two. The approach looked at the hole, and was very close to an Albatross.

Currently ranked fourth in Rolex standings, Lewis is projected to move up to third with her victory at the Sentosa Golf Club. Playing partner Na Yeon Choi who is ranked second, and finished in second place should make the race very close and put some pressure on the LPGA’s top golfer, Yani Tseng.

The ladies will get next week off as the tour moves back to the US for the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup which will begin in Phoenix on March 14. The tour will remain at home until late May when they will travel to the Bahamas.
