Saturday’s AT&T American Cup began the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics for the participating gymnasts and it could not have gone any better for 15-year-old Katelyn Ohashi. In her first senior event, Ohashi followed in the footsteps of Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin with the win. She is the latest from the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy to win the event.
Patterson and Liukin used the momentum gained at the American Cup to go on to win the all-around Olympic title. Your move, Ohashi.
“It was amazing just to be here,” the Texas native said. “It was my first senior event, so that’s a big confidence-builder for me.”
The 2011 U.S. junior champion edged out her teammate Simone Biles for the title. It was also the first senior event of Biles promising young career.
We will now have to see if the two gymnasts can keep their momentum rolling as they head towards October’s 2013 world championships in Belgium.
