Tennessee Titans Will Not Franchise Tag Jared Cook

With less than an hour remaining for NFL teams to designate one player with the franchise tag, the Tennessee Titans have decided not to use the franchise tag on tight end Jared Cook. The likely reasoning for the Titans deciding to pass up on using the tag on Cook is their unwillingness to fight the battle on whether Cook’s tag would carry the franchise number for tight ends (the position he plays) or wide receiver (the salary number he was hoping for).

Per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean:

It is a surprising move after all reports had indicated the Titans planned on using the tag on Cook. It is also unlikely that a long-term deal will be completed by next week’s official start of free agency, so we could see a big name tight end hit the open market.
