The New Orleans Saints have been relatively quiet in the NFL Free Agency rumor mill, but there is finally a bit of news surfacing about their plans once the new league year kicks off on March 12.
According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, left tackle Jermon Bushrod is the team’s top priority among their free agents.
The Saints are currently around $2.5 million over the salary cap, so a round of cuts and restructures will have to be made in the coming days so that the team can focus on the open market and work on bringing their left tackle back to town.
Unfortunately for the Saints, Bushrod is one of the top left tackles in free agency and that could result in him cashing in on a big deal.
If Bushrod gets a big money offer, New Orleans will be unable to match and they will have to watch their starting left tackle walk in free agency. That would be a less than ideal situation for a team that needs to protect Drew Brees.
So if New Orleans is serious about re-signing Bushrod, they will need to get aggressive and start clearing up the cap space immediately.
