NCAA Tournament 2013: Liberty Earns Automatic Bid With Big South Title

After starting the season 0-8,the Liberty Flames were able to end on a four-game winning stream and earn the Big South Conference championship and an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Flames were able to upset Charleston Southern, 87-76. They are the fourth team to earn an automatic bid to the tournament.

John Caleb Sanders led the way for Liberty in their win with an impressive stat line of 27 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Liberty will play in the first-round game against a yet to be determined opponent.

It is only the second time in NCAA history that a team with 20 losses has qualified for the tournament field and the third time that Liberty has made the bracket. Liberty has lost their previous two tournament appearances to St. Joseph’s and North Carolina in 1994 and 2004, respectively.

Making the field is another great achievement for the university and could be the start of a Cinderella story.

Be sure to stay tuned to throughout championship week as we keep you up to date with the latest conference champions and teams that earn automatic bids into the 2013 NCAA tournament field.

This is a cool deal for Liberty and fans, I just hope they
don’t bow out as quickly as St. Marys did, lol. I’m all for having
smaller, less-recognized teams in the dance, but I hope one or two of them can
make it past the first round this year, a la Butler 2011. I work a lot of
late nights at DISH these days, but my new DISH Anywhere app is keeping me
up-to-speed in the meantime. I turn the game on live after I get off work
(works on Android and Apple devices), and since it lets me take all my live TV
and DVR with me, I just turn on a movie if the game’s a bust.
