When the Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision to sign cornerback William Gay, it was viewed as a sign that free agent corner Keenan Lewis was unlikely return. As more information is gathered about the Steelers plans, it looks like the speculation of Lewis’ departure has some validity.
As we sit here in early March, the top three cornerbacks shape up as Ike Taylor and Cortez Allen starting and William Gay in the slot in the nickel defense. Maybe they will pull a rabbit out of their hat and re-sign Lewis, but that is beginning to look as difficult as re-signing Wallace.
They would not have signed Gay had they thought Lewis would be back or if Curtis Brown developed the way they had hoped.
Lewis will likely generate a lot of interest on the free agent market and with the team’s current salary cap situation it is unlikely that they would be able to outbid one of Lewis’ potential suitors.
