And now it is official. The Kansas City Chiefs have gone from pursuing the top free agent cornerback remaining on the market, Sean Smith, to locking him up in their most recent offseason move.

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports was first to report the news, while Ian Rapoport of NFL Network passed along more details about the free agent’s new contract:

This is just the latest move by the Chiefs that sets them up for success and serious improvement moving forward. You have to love what John Dorsey and Andy Reid are doing in Kansas City. The Denver Broncos went out and added Wes Welker to their receiving corp of Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, so the Chiefs countered by signing Smith and Dunta Robinson.

We should have some very interesting match ups in the AFC West this season.

It’s hard to look at what the Chiefs have been doing and not consider them one of the top winners of the free agency period.
