The Arkansas Razorbacks are currently looking to replace last year’s starter Tyler Wilson who is set to enter the NFL following the 2013 draft and they have a cluster of signal-callers looking to emerge as next season’s starter. The five quarterbacks in the mix for the starting quarterback gig are Brandon Allen, Brandon Mitchell, Brian Buehner, A.J. Derby and Taylor Reed.
While there are five gave in the mix, Razorbacks head coach Bret Bielema has pointed out two of the players as front-runners.
“I think there is no doubt on offense the key is going to be who is going to be our trigger puller, and I think Brandon Allen and Brandon Mitchell both have shown that they’ve been ahead of the curve,” Bielema said, according to the university.
Despite Bielma giving Allen and Mitchell the early seal of approval, he has been commenting on the other signal-callers in the mix.
“I would say that A.J. Derby has shown that he is definitely a guy that can manage a game,” he said. “He has been in that position and impressed us. He is a thirsty kid, who is always eager to learn. I would think that the more reps we can get to those five guys the better off we are going to be, especially the top two in Brandon Allen and Brandon Mitchell.”
Allen was Tyler Wilson’s primary back up last season and started five games last season as a redshirt junior. All signs point to the job being his to lose, but for now the Razorbacks leading man is calling this a two-horse race.
