MAC Tournament Championship 2013: Akron Earns Conference's Automatic Bid

The Akron Zips have done it again. In the MAC tournament championship, the Zips were able to take down the Ohio Bobcats at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win, Akron has earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA tournament.

Akron took down Ohio 65-46.

Just a week ago, there were concerns that Akron’s season could come to a screeching halt when starting guard Alex Abreu was arrested on drug trafficking charges. Despite the concerns, the Zips were able to prevail.

Akron has been a part of the past seven MAC tournament championship games and they have qualified for three of the past five NCAA tournaments. The Zips are familiar with March Madness, so as unlikely as it seems, they could pull off one of the early round upsets. Akron currently looks like they will come in at a between a No. 13 and No. 15 seed.

The complete field of tournament participants will be announced on Selection Sunday less than twenty four hours from now.
