UFC 158 Results: Jake Ellenberger Scores First-Round Knockout Over Nate Marquardt

In the first fight of the UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz welterweight triple-header on the pay-per view main card, Jake Ellenberger welcomed Nate Marquardt back to the octagon. Marquardt was a late replacement on the card after Rory McDonald was forced off of the card with an injury. Marquardt stepped up on short notice and was immediately back in the UFC’s good graces.

The winner of this bout was set to take the next big step towards the 170-pound elite with a top three opponent likely next in line.

Both fighters came out with cautious aggression while they were feeling out their opponent. Once the first 90 seconds of round one went by, the pace picked up and both fighters began throwing bombs. Ellenberger was landing the straighter, quicker punches and managed to cut Marquardt on one exchange. As Ellenberger continued to press the action, he backed Marquardt up against the cage.

Marquardt had his back to the cage and ate a huge left-right combo from Ellenberger that forced him to crumble to the ground. Ellenberger pounced on his opponent and rained down bombs until the lights went out.

The referee stepped in to save Marquardt from further damage and Ellenberger earned the knockout victory at the 3:00 mark of the very first-round.

It was an impressive win for Ellenberger as he continues to establish himself as a true force in the welterweight division. It will be interesting to see who he gets matched up against next.
