Charl Schwartzel Tied Second as Play Suspended in Maylasia

The second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open was suspended for darkness Friday evening with players including current leader, Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand is still on the golf course. The tournament is trying to catch up after thunderstorms interrupted play on Thursday at the Kuala Lumpur Golf Course. Play will resume on Saturday morning to complete the second round before making the cut. Aphibarnrat was at -10 under par, and -3 under for the day. He has only completed nine holes.

2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel shares second place with China’s Ashun Wu, and both have completed their second rounds. Both are one stroke back at -9 under par. Schwartzel was four under for the day, and made only two bogeys in his round on the front nine at sixth and seventh holes. He made the turn at even par 36, and had bookend birdies at the 10th and 11th holes again at 17 and 18.

Schwartzel has had a pretty good start to his 2013 season. The 29 year old from Vereeniging, South Africa finished his 2012 season with a tie for third at the season ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. He began his season with a win at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and followed that with a second place at the Joburg Open. His only bad outing was a first round exit at The Match Play Championships at Dove Mountain. He didn’t fare well in the snow storm in Arizona. He ended up with a T16 at the Cadillac Championship on the Florida Swing.

Charl Schwartzel was one of the hottest golfers coming out of the Sunshine Tour, and cooled a bit in the US, but is currently ranked number 17 in the OWGR, and with his early win is fifth in Race To Dubai points. He has eight European Tour wins on his resume, and is looking to have a great 2013 season.

World number three, Luke Donald was able to get seven holes in prior to play being suspended. He made two birdies, and has his score back to even par. He moved up 33 spots to a tie for 60th place, and is still in danger of missing the cut.
