Move on over Miami Heat, there is a new basketball team taking over. The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles are quickly becoming the nation’s favorite basketball squad thanks to their incredible run so far in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Entering the tournament as a No. 15-seeded team that no one had ever heard of, Florida Gulf Coast shocked the world in their first tournament game in school history by taking down the No. 2 seed Georgetown Hoyas.
Unlike the other No. 15 seeds that have advanced to the Round of 32 in the past, Florida Gulf Coast did not slow down.
The Eagles came out on fire against No. 7 seed San Diego State and showed unbelievable confidence. Florida Gulf Coast went on a 17-0 run in the second half and jumped out to a double-digit lead.
Florida Gulf Coast fans and players, along with the entire population of the United States that was tuned in an not an Aztecs fan, was rooting on the team we have come to know as “Dunk City.”
Perhaps the greatest part of this improbable run has been how much fun the players are having on the court and on the sidelines. There isn’t a single player on the roster that isn’t out there soaking up every minute of tournament play that they probably never could have imagined in their wildest dreams.
Now, in their second-year of eligibility, Florida Gulf Coast is the first No. 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16.
How are the players celebrating? With chicken dances on the sidelines. That’s right. Perhaps they are trying to emulate eagles soaring by flapping their wings, but you can’t fool us. It is certainly a chicken dance and I love it.
Check out this GIF from CJ Fogler of Eagles guard Christophe Varidel of Switzerland rocking out with his wings out:
God bless us all. It is moments like this that make the tournament so fascinating and special.
How far can Florida Gulf Coast advance in the tournament? We’ve got to tune in to find out. Be sure to stay tuned to FanSided.com throughout the entire tournament as we keep you up to date with the latest results.
Until next time… Dunk City:
