It seems that almost every year when we begin to talk about the Masters, Angel Cabrera seems to find his way onto the leaderboard. Nothing has changed in 2013 at The Shell Houston Open as Cabrera fired a -6 under par 66 on Thursday to snag a piece of fourth place. In fact….he is the only player near the top of the leaderboard with Major Championship pedigree. Cabrera is a two time major champion, wining the 2007 U S Open at Oakmont, and the 2009 Masters.

Beginning his day on the front nine, Cabrera warmed up on the front nine in his bogey free round by making the turn at -2 under 34, but hit the back nine in a full sprint. He made a hat trick of birdies starting at number 10, and added one at the 18th hole to stake his claim at The Redstone Golf Course. He is tied with Jason Kokrak, and is two shots off of the pace set by D.A. Points.

The 43 year old Cabrera from Cordoba, Argentina has had a terrible spring on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open, and last week at Bay Hill.He was tied for 33rd at The Northern Trust Open which was his best finish of the year. He does not qualify for WGC events, so he was able to pick up a T 30 at The Puerto Rico Open. He is currently 132 in FedEx Cup points after six events.

Angel Cabrera can play golf when he get’s hot. His victory at Oakmont in 2007 came at the expense of Jim Furyk, and Tiger Woods who both finished runner-up. He won by four strokes. His victory at Augusta in 2009 didn’t come quite as easy. He finished regulation tied with Chad Campbell, and Kenny Perry but beat them in the playoff. Campbell was eliminated on the first playoff hole, and Perry on the second.
