On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Mike Alvarado defeated Brandon Rios by unanimous decision (115-113, 115-113, 114-113) in a 12-round fight that matched, if not exceeded the intensity of their first match-up, back in October of 2012. And yes, it sure looks like there will be a third fight coming up in the relatively near future, if the post-fight interviews were any indication.
Despite looking much worse for the wear than his competition by the end of the match, Alvarado’s technique and stamina caused him to surge ahead of Rios as the fight wore on. In contrast to the previous fight, Alvarado was able to hang in and withstand Rios during the early and middle rounds and eventually surged ahead as the rounds passed. The decision was not really in doubt, and correctly turned out to be unanimous.
Also of note:
- This is Rios’ first loss in 33 career decisions, which of course includes his seventh-round knockout of Alvarado this past October. Another reason for him to want to settle the current 1-1 tie with a third match in the near future.
- According to multiple news outlets, Alvarado had to go to the hospital for a CT scan due to a cut over his eye after the fight, causing him to miss the press conference.
