Landon Donovan returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy after four months away from the team. When he was set to return, there were some questions about how he would be received back to the team, but those questions were quickly answered whenever veteran defender Todd Dunivant made a symbolic gesture to welcome Donovan back. To the surprise of Donovan, Dunivant handed over the captain’s armband.
“I was surprised. I told him no at first and he insisted so it was a very nice gesture,” said Donovan, via the team’s official website.” More than anything, it was nice to be on the field. I really want to contribute and I’m really anxious to contribute and make a difference.”
For Dunivant, it wasn’t a big deal it was his way of welcoming Donovan back to the team. Donovan was the captain since the 2007-08 season, so it was Dunivant’s way of making sure Donovan still knew he was one of the team’s leaders.
“It was just a symbolic gesture to show that we had fully welcomed him back,” Dunivant said. “He’s as much as part of these team as he ever was, so it’s as simple as that. He’s been our leader and it’s more of a symbolic gesture than anything.”
It was a great gesture by Dunivant and one that will help Donovan get comfortable with the team in his return sooner rather than later.
