The Los Angeles Lakers retired the jersey of star center Shaquille O’Neal on Tuesday night and raised his jersey in to the rafters among the greatest players to ever put on the purple and gold. Shaq became the ninth Lakers player to receive the honor of having his jersey retired, but his jersey will be coming down soon… for a little fix.
After examining the jersey, the Lakers realized there was a slight error in the larger than life jersey for the larger than life personality and star center.
Superman’s jersey was printed on the wrong side.
The jersey that Shaq was honored with was a post-1999 jersey when the team re-designed their uniforms. The giant V-neck on Shaq’s jersey made it clear that his name and number were printed on the front of the replica jersey rather than the back, but the team will fix the problem.
“The new jersey will be ready and installed prior to Friday’s game,” a team spokesman said in an email Wednesday via ESPN.
For Shaq, standing out in the crowd is nothing new, but the team wants to make sure his jersey that is hanging in the rafters at Staples Center is done the right way.
