Two of boxing’s best met in the ring Saturday night to unify the WBO and WBA super bantamweight titles at Radio City Music Hall. Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux were looking to become the undisputed king of their weight class and put on a show.
Donaire was unable to get off against the much quicker Rigondeaux, and that made all of the difference. Rigondeaux improved to 12-0, after earning the unanimous decision victory. The judges scorecards read 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111.
It was Donaire’s first loss since 2001 and he was apologetic for his lackadaisical performance afterwards.
“I apologize,” Donaire said, via ESPN.com. “I wanted to deliver. During the last two rounds, I got stupid. I didn’t do my job. I didn’t use my jab and go to my left. I have no excuse. He beat me tonight. I gave it all I got. I never studied the fight and I should have.”
