On his yearly draft conference call with the NFL media, NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock shared his thoughts on the upcoming draft class. Mayock initially went against the grain when he shared his belief that there would be no cornerbacks drafted in the first-round. When Mayock went in depth later in his call, he made a stunning comment about a change at the top of his cornerback rankings.
Many believe that former Alabama corner Dee Milliner is the clear top cornerback in the 2013 NFL Draft class, but Mayock doesn’t seem to agree.
Mayock announced on the call that Houston corner DJ Hayden is the new No. 1 corner on his board. Not only that, but Mayock has him No. 14 on his overall draft board.
There are some serious health issues surrounding Hayden after his near-death injury that was suffered back in November, but since then, Hayden has been impressing everyone with his surprising recovery and on-field workouts.
Hayden was able to run a 4.3-second 40-yard dash at the University of Houston Pro Day, just four months after his injury. Normally, the recovery time for the injury is one-year. It takes almost six weeks for a person to be released from the hospital after surgery if they survive, but Hayden was released in six days.
Of course, Mayock’s view doesn’t necessarily mean teams around the league agree, but it is interesting to note.
Hayden certainly has the potential to be a star at the next level, and there is a good chance Mayock is hearing some rumblings that a team is thinking of drafting him much higher than most expect.
