Mixed martial arts fans have been treated to an incredible month of April that has been action-packed with two major events left to go. This weekend, UFC on FOX 7 will take place with a lightweight unification bout between UFC champion Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez, while next weekend light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his title on the line against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 on pay-per view.
While we have a fun two weekends ahead of us, the future could be especially exciting for fans of the sport with a fight that we have all been waiting for.
UFC president Dana White was speaking with media today when he stated that welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s next fights will be against either top 170-pound contender Johny Hendricks or the pound-for-pound greatest, Anderson Silva.
“I am literally going to call Georges St. Pierre today and see what he wants to do [next],” White told the MMA media during a scrum at the UFC on FOX 7 pre-fight event, via MMA Mania. “I think if Jon Jones beats Chael Sonnen [at UFC 159] then we have to wait [for the outcome of] Anderson Silvaand his fight against Chris Weidman. Maybe [Georges] wants to fight Anderson if he wins [at UFC 162].”
“If Georges says to me, ‘I want to fight Anderson,’ do you think I’m going to go, ‘No you’re not, you’re fight Johny Hendricks!’”
Let’s all hope that St-Pierre decides now is the time to fight Silva.
Both fighters have been dominant in their weight classes and it would be great to finally see two of the greatest UFC champions of all-time meet in the cage for the superfight that fans have been asking for.
If there is a MMA god, this fight will come together.
