Veteran designated hitter David Ortiz continued his rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, and he looked ready to make the move back to the majors. Ortiz was able to smash a home run in a swing that he hopes will carry him back to the Red Sox roster.
Ortiz and the Red Sox had been targeting a Friday return, and that certainly looks now. Ortiz said after the game that he is ready to rejoin the team’s major league roster.
“I think I go back to the big team tomorrow,” Ortiz told Tim Britton of the Providence Journa. “I’m old enough to know what I need to do to keep it compact. … We were taking our time and just trying to do the right thing. It’s time.”
Ortiz has not played a major league game since August 24. During his time with Pawtucket for the rehab assignment, he went 4-for-18 with four RBIs and a home run.
Whenever Ortiz is finally called back up to the Red Sox major league roster, Jackie Bradley, Jr. is expected to head back to Triple-A Pawtucket.
