NFL Draft 2013: New York Jets Select Sheldon Richardson No. 13 Overall

The New York Jets had the luxury of picking twice in the first round but the questions was what would they do with their second pick that they acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Some thought they would trade back with the pick but they ended up staying put and fortifying their
New York went with a pick that made more than enough sense at 9th overall when they drafted Dee Milliner but while that was an excellent pick, everyone glossed over it to focus on what would happen with that second first-rounder. Mark Sanchez drew a ton of criticism last year when he was the face of the Jets failure and many people were calling for his head. After all, the Jets were ranked 30th in the league in offense and while Sanchez ended up getting benched, his butt-fumble is the lasting image from the 2012 season.
Geno Smith was an option here but the Jets realized that with a defensive minded head coach in Rex Ryan, New York was going to have to win with defense.
Sheldon Richardson is a guy that may not make the fans in New York happy, but he’s a guy that will make Rex Ryan and John Idzik happy as he plugs a major hole in the middle of the Jets defensive line and can help squash some running games in the AFC.
It’s not the pick that Jets fans wanted to hear but it’s one that might end up dragging them away from the but-fumble days of 2012.
