UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones retained his 205-pound title after a first-round stoppage of contender Chael Sonnen that came at the 4:33 mark of the first-round. Many in attendance filled the arena with boos after what was perceived to be an early stoppage, and it was known shortly after that Jones had badly broken his foot.
The champion’s big toe was practically making a right angle and it obviously misplaced with blood pouring from his foot.
The harsh reality for mixed martial arts fans is that Jones was just 27 seconds away from losing his light-heavyweight title belt to the contender Sonnen by way of TKO doctor stoppage. That decision would have outraged fight fans, but it would have been the right call if the fight was not called to a stop while Sonnen was still actively defending himself.
