Vancouver Canucks goalie Cory Schneider entered the postseason with an undisclosed injury that appeared to be minor on the surface, but it now looks like it is a little more serious than everyone had imagined. Schneider will be unable to start in net and veteran Robert Luongo will get the start in his place.
The Canucks begin their Stanley Cup run tonight at the Rogers Arena against the San Jose Sharks.
“I wasn’t sure what was happening the whole week,” Luongo said. “For me, it’s an opportunity and I’m excited for it. I’m just excited to be playing some playoff hockey again.”
Luongo was most recently in the net on Saturday against Edmonton when he gave up five goals in a span of less than four minutes during the third-period. Vancouver suffered a 7-2 loss that night.
This season, Luongo went 9-6-3 and had a save percentage of .907.
Vancouver will call up Joe Cannata from the AHL to serve as Luongo’s back up.
