The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is in the books. After a rain filled day at Churchill Downs the horses made their way to the starting gate before charging down the sloppy track. After Palace Malice was leading for most of the race, Normandy Invasion made a late push before Orb made an incredible late charge to pull away.
This was one of the more intriguing field of three-year olds in recent memory with a number of horses that were true contenders for the race. The excite continued throughout the entire race with a few late race changes.
Here is a GIF of the finish to the race:
Joel Rosario rode a perfect race and paced Orb throughout the race before making the late push. It was a very pleasing win for trainer Shug McGaughey and the first Kentucky Derby win for both McGaughey and Rosario.
“It means everything to me. I’ve always dreamed of this day and it finally came,” an emotional McGaughey said after the race.
McGaughey is a Kentucky native and the derby win will be something that he never forgets.
Orb was followed by Golden Soul in second and Revolutionary in third.
