While NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki might be on the downward slope of his career, he’s everything you’d hope for in a franchise player. Not only is he a regular atop NBA leader boards and a fixture at All-Star games, he’s also willing to take a paycut to help his team win.
Nowitzki, during an interview with KRLD-FM in Dallas, said that he’d not only be assisting the Mavs in the upcoming NBA Draft but that he would also be involved in bringing in free agents, starting with lowering his salary.
I’ll definitely be a little involved. But I’ll be in the draft ‘war room’ for the first time … order some pizza and talk some basketball. I got one year left on this deal and then I’m coming off the books. So if that helps for us to be better I’m going to take a paycut.
Apparently a general manager in waiting, Dirk overviews an entire pitch which he, owner Mark Cuban and GM Donnie Nelson plan to use to lure NBA talents to the Big D.
The Mavericks have set themselves up perfectly for the 2014-15 free agent frenzy as they only have two contracts on the books (just $2 million guaranteed) – however, both of those deals are team options which the Mavericks can opt to decline if they so choose.
