The UFC on FX 8 co-main event featured the highly anticipated UFC debut of No. 8 ranked middleweight Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza as he took on Chris Camozzi. Souza is a former Strikeforce title holder that has been at the top of his division for a number of years. For Camozzi, it was a perfect opportunity to jump up the rankings at 185-pounds by taking down a top fighter on short notice, but it wouldn’t be easy taking on one of the world’s best middleweight in his home country.
Camozzi started off the fight looking to keep it standing, but Jacare was able to quickly latch on to the American and press him against the cage before landing a devastating punch and taking the fight onto the mat, which is exactly where Camozzi did not want to be
Jacare, one of the most decorated jiu jitsu practioners in ther world, was able to perfectly execute his signature guard passes and then rained down some heavy ground-and-pound. Camozzi was able to regain guard, but that didn’t last long. Jacare escaped to side control before a wild transition landed him in an omoplata attempt that he used to get back in the dominant position. Jacare worked his way to mount where he was able to transition to the head-arm triangle and choke Camozzi unconscious.
It took just 3:37 in to the first-round to get the job done.
After the win, the entire Brazilian crowd came together to do Jacare’s trademark gator chomp while the Brazilian called for the winner of the night’s main event between Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold.
Just like that, Jacare came in to the UFC with a bang. His jiu jitsu was flawless and he is going to be a tough out for whoever he matches up against.
