Superfight is a word that mixed martial arts fans often throw around when they discuss the most desirable fights in the sport. The most appealing superfight in the MMA community is currently middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva vs. light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones. Both men have appeared unstoppable in their recent fights and that means the superfight chatter is only getting louder.
Luckily for mixed martial arts fans, we seem closer than ever to getting the fight we all want to see.
In a recent interview, UFC president Dana White said that it is possible for us to get the superfight later this year if Silva gets by his next challenge.
“Silva has a fight coming up on July 6, he’s fighting Chris Weidman. Many people think this is a very serious threat to his record and his title and everything else. But if he gets past this test with Weidman, we could see this [Jones] super fight this year,” White said, via MMA Mania.
We have been teased with potential superfights before, so no one should get too excited, but their has never been a better time for a fight of this magnitude.
Weidman has a real shot at knocking off Silva in July, but it a Silva win really gives us the superfight against Jon Jones, there won’t be many people pulling for Weidman in this one.
