St. Louis Cardinals Close To Calling Up Top Prospect Michael Wacha?

Michael Wacha, the 19th pick in 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft might be on his way to The Show.

Scheduled to start today for the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A Memphis squad, Wacha’s name was removed from his starting pitcher slot – leading to speculation that he’ll be called up and start for the Red Birds this coming Thursday.

Per Jenifer Langosch:

Michael Wacha no longer listed as Sunday’s pitcher for Triple-A Memphis. Have to wonder if that means he’ll start for #STLCards Thursday.

Last evening, St. Louis Cardinals starter John Gast was forced to leave his start with tightness in his left shoulder and given there’s been no indication that Wacha himself has any injury, the removal from his pending start has some eyebrows raised.

The 21-year-old Wacha has been dominating in AAA, posting a 2.05 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in his first nine starts – this on top of an already impressive Spring Training earlier this year.

The Cardinals currently sit atop the National League with a 31-17 record, despite dealing with a gluten of injuries.
