The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without talented young outfielder Starling Marte today, as Detroit Tigers MLB.com beat writer Jason Beck tweeted his absence is due to migraine symptoms. The Pirates are giving Marte the day off today, and Beck tells us that Brandon Inge will end up getting the start at third base as a result of the “shuffle”. The Tigers are, of course, familiar with Inge, and I have a feeling they are just as happy to see Inge in the lineup as they are to hear that they won’t have to deal with Marte.
Marte should be able to play in the next game of the series, so him missing the opener shouldn’t be a big deal for the Pirates. The key is whether or not Marte’s migraine lingers, because it would hurt to lose him for a few more games. The 24-year-old has been an integral part of this Pirates team with a .367 OBP this season, and he’s offered up plenty of speed on the basepaths with 13 thefts. Heck, throw in five home runs, 36 runs, and ten doubles as other numbers of note from Marte.
The last game Marte missed was last week in a routine day of rest. Yesterday against the Milwaukee Brewers, Marte lit up the rivals with a double, a single, a steak, and his 13th stolen base on the season.
