After Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez went down with a shoulder injury yesterday, it was a complete crapshoot as to who’d pick up the duties.

Speculation has been quieted though as Indians manager Terry Francona announced that Vinnie Pestano will get the first opportunity for save chances

Francona: Pestano will serve as first option at closer while Perez is on DL.

There’s been no word on how serious Perez’s injury is, so the move is only expected to be temporary but given the immediate DL status of Perez and the discomfort he appeared to be in, you have to wonder if Perez will be out longer than initially suspected.

Pestano has dealt with his own problems this year, many suggesting that his dip in velocity is related to a right elbow injury. Still, outside of his most recent blowup against the Boston Red Sox where he gave up four runs in an inning of work, Pestano has been solid and should prove to continue that theme in the closers role.
