There was hope that Chicago Cubs reliever Kyuji Fujikawa was only dealing with a forearm strain, but testing showed otherwise and the 32-year-old pitcher will now go under the knife, this according to Patrick Mooney.
Cubs announce Fujikawa will need Tommy John surgery.
Fujikawa was in the midst of playing his first season the Major Leagues after spending the last twelve years in Japan as a member of the Hashin Tigers.
The adjustment from the NPB to the MLB wasn’t proving to be easy for Fujikawa as the right handed arm had a 5.25 ERA prior to being shut down, the ballooning ERA thanks to a couple big meltdowns against the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves.
Fujikawa is expected to return towards the middle of the 2014 season, a hefty blow to the Cubs who signed the Kochi native to a two year deal worth nearly $10 million dollars this past offseason (though there is a third option year, if the Cubs opt to exercise it).
Another tough blow in a long line of them for the Cubbie faithful.
